Outreach

Seeking active faithfulness.....

Outreach and mission are strongly held values, whether we are helping through the Boston City Mission Society, the Sunday School's "Soup-er" Sunday fundraiser, or the Senior High Youth Group's service project adventures both near and far.

BRISTOL LODGE
Members of this church have been serving at the Bristol Lodge Soup Kitchen for over 20 years, faithfully providing dinner for about 60 people 6 times a year. Sadly it is becoming harder to find people who are able to provide this service, so we have decided to break up the duties into different components, in the hopes that more people will feel able to participate. This is a very important part of our service to the community and we encourage you to participate in any way you can.
General information
· Bristol Lodge is in the basement of a church on Moody Street in Waltham. Dinner is served at 5:00 pm on the 4th. Saturday of January, March, May, July, September, and November. Volunteers need to arrive around 4:30 pm to set up.
· There are several people at Bristol Lodge who will show you what to do and help you do it. Ovens are already on for re-heating, large serving dishes are available for salad, rolls etc. The people who come for dinner are friendly and extremely grateful.
· The meal consists of a main course - we usually take lasagna, rolls, salad, milk, and dessert.

Volunteer opportunities:
1. Provide the main dish: Purchase or makelasagna for about 60 people - more in winter. Deliver it to CCW, hot, at 4:15 pm on the day we serve.
2. Purchase the other things that are needed for the meal and deliver them to CCW on the day we serve: 4 gallons of milk, rolls for 60+, salad (bags of ready-toserve), dessert (cookies, brownies...)
3. Serve the meal - collect all the food from CCW, take it to Bristol Lodge at 4:30 pm, set up and serve. Work with their volunteers on clean-up. We usually finish by 6:00 pm.

If you want to take care of the whole operation, as people have in the past, we would welcome it! However we are hoping that, by splitting up the duties, more people will feel able to participate. Serving the meal is something which many of our older church children and youth really enjoy. (Bristol Lodge is not a good place for very young children -- too many open doorways and hot ovens!)

There will be a Bristol Lodge page in the Sign-up book in the hall. Please consider adding this service to the many other things that you all do for others.

Please ask if you have questions.

OCTOBER 2010

Sunday, October 3rd is the Annual CROP Walk supporting disaster relief. Please meet at Weston
Town Hall at 1:00pm if you would like to participate in the three-mile walk around town.

Looking ahead we need a volunteer or volunteers to prepare and serve dinner at Bristol Lodge on
Saturday, November 27. Feel free to contact Rebekah Gardiner or anyone else on the Outreach Committee with any questions.

Thank you.

SEPTEMBER 2010

Rebekah Lord Gardiner

The days are getting cooler and the sun is setting earlier. Both are signs that summer is ebbing away and Autumn will be upon us. As we get back into the routine of school and extracurricular activities, we invite you to sign up for a Saturday meal for Bristol Lodge or possibly consider a donation to the food pantry at the Council on Aging.

We are planning a service project weekend in the spring but closer to home this year. Stay tuned for details. Our collections at Christmas and Easter will be supporting Watch and Reach again. If there is an outreach effort close to your heart that you want to see supported, contact someone on the committee and we will try to help you. We appreciate the generosity of our congregation.

Save the date of Sunday afternoon, October 3, for the annual Ecumenical CROP Walk in town. The need for disaster relief funds has never been greater, literally, with the devastation in Haiti, Pakistan and beyond. Meet at the Town Hall at 1:00 p.m. You will find information at the church all through the month of September."
